Hi All,
My 4870x2 is a bit knackered, so i am looking to replace it with something.

My question is, what current generation gfx card should i go for? I have been out of the gaming hardware scene since two years ago when I built my current machine.

Rick

470 / 5870 would be an upgrade or improvement in some respects and those cards are pretty much the minimum I would consider if replacing it. An overclocked 5850 would also be in with a shout.

For an overall upgrade as in terms of power then you're looking at a 480 / 580 or 5970. Personally I'd hang on since AMD are releasing the 6900 range in December.

What he said.

Sit and wait and hope the stock levels are high at chrimbo or go for the 470 in sli i did from the 4870 x2 and was well pleased

Okay, thanks for the advice, I will hang on till after Christmas.. turns out my dad needs a new computer for Christmas so i can't really afford a new gfx card till early next year.

Probably the best bet, you'd be a bit wee'd off if you bought a 5870 and a fortnight later a 6950 came out cheaper and beat it in all aspects, which is possible.

I too replaced my knackered 4870x2 with a geforce gtx 470. Brilliant card well worth it.

Okay, so its after christmas now!

The new 6900 range is out so what is the best card/bundle around? I don't really have a budget but sub £500 would be nice.

Get a GTX 570, I've seen a few people talk about their upgrade from 4870X2 to the GTX 570 and they seemed more than happy with the card.

dual 6950s would be good.

This and unlock to 6970s, if that happens and you get some good clockers you could have close to 580sli (stock) performance at a bargain price!
Look at some benchmarks of 6950/6970 xfire v 570 sli etc and see what floats your boat :D

I went 4870x2 to a GTX570 a big improvement for sure.
Those 6950s would be better though if they both unlock to 6970 even better.

I think... I will go for the two 6950s, I have always been an ATI guy so that just seems to sit better with me.

Will double check with linux drivers first but I think that should be fine.

Thanks for all the advice.
