Replacing a iPod Nano battery - shock horror!

I have a 2nd generation iPod Nano, which conveniently died a month after the warranty ran out. My local Apple store have told me that I need a replacement battery, which will cost me £50. On top of this, the store doesn't seem to stock the batteries and I've now been told that there is another charge of £50 to actually fit the new battery, if it becomes available. This is ridiculous considering that the thing only cost £140 new.

What would you do?

Thanks,

Jon
