Hey guys,

Quick one really - My friends laptop hard drive has died, and I have offered to help him with the problem as the laptop is just out of warranty and he needs to get it fixed pretty quickly. I unfortunately whilst having built hundreds of computers have never opened up a laptop!

Firstly, is installing a laptop hard-drive as easy as installing a computer hard-drive or is there a lot of difference?

Secondly, I've insisted he buys the hard-drive from here (because that's the kinda guy I am), can someone point me in the right direction for what hard-drive is best for him?

He has an Acer Aspire 4752.

Cheers in advance for any help guys!

its easy (usually) to repalce,

what ever size 2.5 sata drive should be ok..

if the drive you removed was 5400rmp I would personally only replace it with another 5400 or it mich cook

The aspires drives are on the back covered by a plastic cover and a few screws easy enough to swap turn off turn over unscrew and pull out, it will probably be a standard 2.5 sata so pick one of the many based on size and cost.

As an aside the new acers have recoveries on the hard drives so if he didnt make a dvd copy you may have trouble, we have a fair few come through here at work though so I might have a disk that would work

Point him here :P

The SSD will be like night and day performance differenance.

As for the replacement, unless its an ultrabook or other really low profile device any 2.5 form factor HDD or SDD should fit, all you need to do is remove the backplate on the laptop release the HDD mounting braket, remove the HDD install the new one, pop the new HDD complete with the mounting device back in.... bob's ya uncle. Then just seal the unit back up.

as Stuie says windows could be abit of a problem :(

Thanks for the prompt response guys!

He only needs a direct replacement for his hard-drive so I will give him one of these:

When you say they have recoveries on the hard-drives presumably if I just install a new hard-drive and a new copy of windows etc that will be alright? I think he has accepted that he will be losing all his files by now...

Any ways to get around the windows issue as well? He says he has all the original disks though I haven't seen what disks they are... I'm guessing windows was probably pre-installed on it and he'll be having an issue with that!

As the way with modern laptop, I bet it never came with the OS DVD..... only the recovery partition on the HDD.

Only way round it is to buy a new copy if this is the case or find another Acer OEM windows CD and then change the product key to the number on the bottom of the laptop.

Other then that ..... Linux ?

Will I be able to use my copy of Windows 7 and just use his serial number? Is that what you're suggesting - they are the same version.

Cheers guys, as always been plenty of help! <3
