My D7000 doesn't really do much, it connects to my VDSL, does some port forwarding and has the firewall enabled, that's about it. I don't use the WiFi (I have a couple of Unifi APs and run the Unifi controller on a Pi), it doesn't run DHCP, that's dealt with by other devices on my LAN.

I'm considering replacing it with a VDSL modem and a more basic router, ideally one which supports SNMP, can do port forwarding and has a firewall.

I'm on Plusnet with their 80/20 package if that info is needed.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks.

Anything that runs DDWRT or similar, or something like an ERX/ERL, the latter would give you a one page management solution with your other Unifi kit.

All require an external modem of some sort as you are aware.

Vigor 130 is the best VDSL modem out there, and it's one of the only ones certified for use on BT lines. As for routers, have you thought about one of the little Netgate units - they're a little ARM box running pfsense. If you can't do something on pfsense, you really don't need to do it.

Personally I run an Asus RT-AC86U and a Vigor 130 on my 80/20 VDSL. Had no problems with it at all. Even runs OpenVPN like a champ, can get full 20Mb between my work PC and home across the VPN.
