Replacing a "pre-n" AP with a "G" one, to improve range

In short, a small office has a Belkin F5D8630-4, version 1000UK adsl router. It's not so good. I think it's overheating (it's hot to the touch, despite being dust free, and it crashes under load or when it's been on for a few days).

Range is required more than speed, which suggests N. However, I suspect that a decent G router will provide a greater range than a rubbish N one (such as the current model). Especially if using one which allows you to increase the power sent to the wifi card.

I'm not asking for someone to recommend a router, only whether a good G class router will offer a better range than the current pre-N system, when connecting to G class adapters. I'm inclined towards something running tomato.

Cheers

I'm fairly sure you need n at both ends to benefit from the improved speed, but I'm not sure if an N router with a G adapter will work at greater range than G at both ends.

I don't know how much the range of a given router can be increased via software either

Cheers
