Hiya!

I currently have a single NEC 20WGX2 which is a great monitor. It is shared between my Mac laptop and my PC desktop. Normally my laptop is closed and I use my monitor for its display.

However, when I work from home I tend to use Visual Studio on this monitor and use my Mac's screen (1440x900) for browsing documentation, email and IM with Synergy allowing me to share the keyboard and mouse between them.

This works great :) but I have fairly poor eyesight and as a result I frequently find myself straining at my little laptop screen when in this configuration. As a result, I was thinking of getting a second monitor to dedicate to the Mac. Ideally I'd like the monitors to match, but this isn't an absolute must. As far as I can see, these are my options:

  • Try to find a second-hand 20WGX2 to add to my existing set-up. This seems to be nearly impossible unless I just fail at looking :p
  • Buy a non-matching second monitor.
  • Sell the 20WGX2 and buy two matching monitors.
  • Buy one really big monitor which can split the screen (possible? ).
  • Forget the whole idea ;)

Constraints:
  • I'd prefer not to spend huge amounts of money, but I'm not too short of cash so will consider anything up to around £1000 for two brand new monitors if necessary.
  • I have a large desk; I can probably just fit 2 x 24" monitors, but I'd prefer them to be smaller (2 x 22" would be more comfortable).
  • I'd like any new monitors I buy to have DisplayPort as I also want to upgrade my Mac laptop this year and they all have DisplayPort outputs now.
  • I want any monitors I buy new to be an upgrade from my 20WGX2! :)
  • As well as programming I also do a fair bit of gaming and some web design, so I don't really want anything too crummy in terms of input lag / response time, colour reproduction etc.
  • I'm not remotely interested in 3D at all.

Any ideas or comments are very much welcome, particularly suggestions of monitors to look at. Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading this far :D

I'd just buy a pair of HP 2475w's as your budget is plenty for them (only a little more than £300 each now). I'm behind the latest but they're fairly well proven and great quality. You'll likely be best with 23/24" as 22" will probably mean compromising on resolution.

Thanks for replying :)

I haven't been able to find the HPs for anywhere near £300, oddly, but I am quite interested in the NEC EA231WMi. That seems to get very good reviews and is considerably cheaper than the HP monitor. The HPs also seem to be out of stock at most places I've seen :(

A friend of mine recently bought the Dell 2209WA which I was quite impressed with, but unfortunately it lacks DisplayPort, otherwise I'd be more interested in two of those. Having said that, it looks like mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters are only £20. Hmm! :)

Having looked around the web actually they're substantially more than I expected at retail. We've just half a dozen at work for £337 each but they were discounted fairly heavily by our suppliers...
