Replacing an nVidia 7600.

A friend has a limited budget and needs to replace his nvidia 7600 (or it may be a 7400). There's the possibility of a second hand 8800 GTX or he'll be paying out I guess £150 for a reasonable card.

Will there be much benefit over the 7600 with the 8800 GTX and will it be worth spending the £150.00.

He's not a serious gamer but does like better graphics.

I had 2 7600GT's running in SLi in an old rig up untill a few weeks ago.
I went with an 8800GTX and saw a decent increase in performance.

The only benefit to going for the 8800 over the 4850 is you won't have to bother worrying about driver clashes.

The 8800 would be pretty much free and give some performance improvement.

I'm not about to pocket a friends money so the £150 would get a GTX 260.

I'm not a great fan of ATI cards, I much prefer the times I've had with Nvidia cards.

I went from an 8800GTS to a GTX260 recently and the difference was night & day.

That said, I went from a 7600GS to the 8800 and that was equally as big a jump.

I'd go for the freebie and tell your mate he can afford a night out for you both - on him. ;)
 
The 8800gtx will offer a huge performance increase over the 7600 and can still run nearly all games well (and can pile AA on), what res will be used though?

if you want to make a proper paid upgrade and stick with nvidia wait and see what the gtx 460 will be like - which is what i'm doing while i put up with my dying 8800gtx.

just make sure the psu can power the 8800gtx or another high end card.
 
It's a big upgrade, yes, but the 8800GTX isn't worth £150. If he has that budget in mind, then he should buy a 5770.

I got a little confused because he said "The 8800 would be pretty much free", I thought if his mate wouldn't accept the 8800 as a gift then he's only got around a £150 budget to spend on a new card from a store? :confused:

Oh well if the 8800GTX is free then that's different!

It depends which 7600 it is. The 7600gt is much faster than the other 7600s. It's actually a stripped down 7800 iirc. It was a very good card for the money and often overlooked. 7600gt is only a shade slower than a x1950pro (I owned both) If the 8800gtx is free and his PSU will take it then it's a good upgrade. Seeing that a new 1gb 4850 is £80, a 2nd hand 8800gtx (which is a touch slower) is only worth about £40
