Replacing ancient heatsink

I have finnaly got round to upgrading my old pc, mainly decreasing the system temps (might have a go at overclocking) that have been concerning me for a while. It is an old Celeron D stock cooler, but what should I use to clean off the thermal paste? should I just wipe it off? I don't know and I REALLY need to find out.

Can I just ask- with what?
I mean would a paper towel work, or would that leave stuff behind (small bits of paper etc.)?

I use a bit of kitchen roll. If you've some alcohol then you can use it too, otherwise dampen the paper very lightly.

Isopropyl alcohol, Meths, Vodka anything that evaporates basically. As long as it doesnt leave a residue behind.
