http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2321

ram = 2 x 1gb pc5300 crucial balistix

all used in htpc for web browsing music and HD playback

I am now interested in upgrading the cpu

1.recomendations please for cpu

2. will it be possible to change over cpu without having to re-format?

please note i am not looking to overclock - looking for maximum stability & longevity

if your looking for a decent upgrade either a q6600 or an e8*00 would be best but to be honest whats the point...the chip does the job fine

Not sure why you need to upgrade your CPU for HTPC.
I would try it without the upgrade first.
Or are you finding it not up to the Job ?
I use a E2200 for my HTPC. But i also have a 8800GS card in it doing all the work.

Personaly stick with the cpu you have at the moment, I have the 2220 in my media center which runs HD ect without any problems.

^^^thanks for all the replies

when i first built my set-up approx 2 years ago i overclocked the e4300 from the off from 1.8ghz to 2.4ghz (i.e e4600 speeds)

i enjoyed the increased speed which was a noticible improvement over standard but opted after a few months to run at standard 1.8ghz as i felt that stability and longevity as well as cooler running was my main requiremennt.

was now looking to upgrade the 1.8ghz e4300 to a 2.4ghz equivalent but only if it is considered a worthwile upgrade
