EDIT: D'oh! Can a mod correct the title to "advice" please :)

Hi All,

As some may know I randomly picked up an E34 535i Sport to tinker with, unfortunately it has an extremely loud after market exhaust fitted (I have no idea what it is but it sounds loud, like those old cherry bomb exhausts!).

It is also an after-market centre pipe (from the headers) all the way to the exhaust, and apparently it is a terrible fit (mechanic said) but I'm not sure if that is at the headers or the other end.

Originally it was a twin pipe from the headers to the cat then twin to the exhaust and twin out, this after-market is single all the way through (apart from where it joins the headers).

I was planning on changing it to an Eisenmann but I phoned them and they only provide the exhaust part, they did not do a centre pipe for the 535i. However, they said they could sell me a stainless steel supersprint centre which would need some welding and modding but could be fitted to the Eisenmann.

The thing is, that comes to nearly £1200 without the welding & fitting, and I only spent £1.5k on the car so reluctant to purchase those parts and having them ruined when welded/fitted (silly I know, but it's not really worth the money or hassle).

So, option 2 was to just get a complete supersprint (centre and exhaust) and just fit that, although that's around £900 (not done much looking around though).

But the pictures I have seen of the supersprint are single piper before the cat (like I currently have, although I assume the SS will fit perfectly) and I am unsure of whether I should go for something like that, or re-fit a stock centre pipe (which is twin from the headers all the way) and just get the Eisenmann exhaust (which hopefully will not require as much welding/fiddling to fit to the stock when compared with the SS centre pipe).

Another thing, which I'm not sure will be possible - the exhaust tail-pipe that is currently fit is a single elongated trapezoid which does look very nice and I was wondering if that could be kept but I replace the rest to get rid of that god awful noise and blowing?

So, what do people think? I'm new to this modifications game (as you can probably tell from my lingo) so forgive any rookie ideas I have mentioned.

I am also having trouble locating stock BMW parts as well as old after market parts and pretty much advice in general, so any places to look would also be appreciated.

I'd do what Eisenmann recommend but the price is rather eye-watering.
I don't think welding and fitting it will ruin it at all IMHO.

One of the brackets on my Eisenmann back box had to be re-welded at the workshop because it didn't fit properly. Everything's custom so it will all require some fettling.

Alternatively, go stock and Eisenmann from that point on. Depends if it's loud enough for you though. Have you looked on ebay.de for bits and bobs? Lots of stuff on there.

Thanks for the reply :)

The price is much higher than I was expecting, and that's with them applying a 15% discount on the Eisenmann and 20% off the Supersprint - but direct from the UK supplier of Eisenmann (and shipped direct from the factory in Germany).

It's not that I thought welding/fitting would ruin it - I just don't know anyone I would trust to do a decent job as I do not know many mechanics, and I'm assuming going to a specialist would bump the price up even more.

Volume wise, a loud exhaust isn't really a requirement (the current exhaust is waaaay too loud, you can literally hear it for miles!) I would just like to resolve the current fitting/blowing issue, and replace the loudness with a nice tone. And the E34 535i stock exhaust is pretty loud anyway so I think the Esenmann will do the job nicely.

Thanks for the tip, didn't think to check ebay.de cheers :)

Any advice on keeping this current tip? I assume the noise is generated by the back box so could I replace that but weld on my tip (if I did go down the welding route) or would that severely effect the exhaust? It would also mean I could just get a cheaper backbox - actually no, this is a terrible idea isn't it? I may as well just take the current set up to a specialist and see if they can fix the dodgy fitting and replace the back box with something quieter?

This car wakes whole neighbourhoods!!

Haha this is very true!! My neighbours thought my M5 was loud... :D

Hahaha fitting the sub has drowned out the monotony of the exhaust a bit, but still drones loudly on the motorways - sounds like that whale woman crying in that YouTube video haha!

Maybe you can have one made from scratch for cheaper? Not sure what you'd do if they don't have a template though.

I wouldn't know the first place to start. I've found a few specialists I could call and discuss, would it really be cheaper?

Might be worthwhile contacting Darjac Racing. Darren has worked on a few E34's (525, 530, M5) that I know of, and their owners are very pleased with the results.

He's a very knowledgeable guy, and I'm sure would be able to offer some good advice if you emailed or phoned him.

Christ, don't get one made, the ones I have seen have been a backwards step, you may as well go and buy a walker replacement in that case..

However..
Eisenmann do sounds the mutts nuts. Spend the cash there if you have it, mating it to a modified Supersprint, if Eisenmann says that's what to be done.. do it, you wont "wreck" the supersprint by getting it welded, how do you thing they are made in the first place. ;)

On the other hand, being as you are not that au fait with what best to do, there is greater need to apply a dose of "hassle factor" into the mix.
With the fact the Supersprint complete sytem is cheaper as well, this would seal it for me..

FIT THE SUPERSPRINT and forget about it.

Thanks, I might drop that Darjac Racing an email if I get completely stuck.

Never even thought about a silencer, cheers Clarkey. In regards to wasting money on an E34... I've got big plans for this car :D

Yeah Fuzz I'm thinking of going for the Eisenmann but with a stock centre as I'm sure BMW knew what they were doing fitting a twin pipe (the SS opens into a single).

mjt cheers for the ebay.de suggestion! A huge selection of parts :)
