Replacing HP wifi card... how do i know what is allowed by the laptop??

you could replace wifi card as long as they are fit. after that you have to install a new drivers for your new wifi card.

google your model number with something like "allowed wifi" or something along those lines and you should get a list of whitelisted wifi cards somewhere.

Wrong! HP restrict the WiFi cards you can install in their laptops to a small number that are whitelisted in the BIOS itself. installing a card that's not listed in the BIOS will cause an error on boot and the BIOS will refuse to post.

Are not all DV8ts intel processors with intel wifi cards eg 5100 ABGN, why would you need to change it. But yes HP put a bioslock on the machins so your generally limited to ones from the same manufacturer. You CAN isntall it once booted by hot pluggin but it will come up with a message on bootup, my DV2 did.
I think some of these laptops have a second PCI express mini slot too.
