Hi all,
so i know i'm risking the harshness of the some of the petrolheads in here, but i would genuinely value some advice. so here goes.

Want to change my 14 plate Hyundai IX35 1.7cdti SE-Nav with another crossover/SUV of similar spec. I like the high driving position and i like tech. ;)

You know what's its like, you get the idea in your head that you want a new car and that's that!
The wife just changed her i20 for a Corsa and she loves it. The CarPlay is excellent.

Ideally i wanted my next car to be a PHEV, but i'm probably not ready for one yet as there still aren't that many about that grab my attention, and charging at home for the present time isn't practical. We do have a fast charging point at work for our pool car (BMW i3), but there'd be a queue for it reckon soon.

I do about 15 miles each way to and from work, covering all the different speeds (30, 40, 50, 60) on my journey so i looked at the outlander PHEV for that purpose.

Other cars that i've looked at:

  1. Mazda CX-5 (like the look of this)
  2. Peugeout new 3008 (Wicked MPG - allegedly)
  3. Honda HR-V (test drove this - nice drive, excellent MPG, allegedly)
  4. Mitubishi ASX (altough the PHEV due Nov 2017)
Cars i've dismissed from my list:

  1. Ford Kuga (way overpriced for crap ecnomoy)
  2. Vauxhall Mokka (feels like a step down from the IX35
  3. Kia Sportage (fuel economy seems as bad as the IX35)
  4. Hyundai Tucson (economy similar to IX35 - for more money)
  5. Volvo XC60 (nice but out of my budget)
  6. Renault Captur and Kadgar (nice but didn't quite wow me)
  7. Nissan Quashqai (simply gone off the look of them)
I accept that i may have to nigh on double what i pay now for the right car, on PCP, but i can offset some of that for much better MPG (and less fuel fillups) so i'm in a pickle of a dilemma to be honest.

So, let's have it please, SUV recommendations between £20-30k :D

Well.....this is the trick. I was hoping you guys could help me. :)
In all honesty, i'm utterly bored with the IX35. When i bought it i read reviews saying it was an unjoyous and dull ride and i thought "who cares about that", but 6 months in i found out what it meant and its true, its simply boring to drive. I've managed the past 20 months with it but now its past the hhalfway point in the PCP i'm itching to change up.
I just don't know........

Yeah, I guess I need to test drive a shortlist to get the answer as to whether any other SUV will drive differently.
I quite like the look of the new Peugeot 3008, but doesn't come out until next Jan. That said I like to look of the current 3008 that I went to look at today.
£20-30k is budget for whatever car I go for, be it new or used. It will still be on PCP though as I don't think our company will be running the salary sacrifice scheme anytime soon.

Edit: my ix35 will probably be worth about £13.5k and I owe £9600 on it

Lol, thanks for the replies fellas.
As you knowledgeable guys can see, i'm not overly savvy when it comes to cars.
Having thought more last night, realistically the budget ought to be around £25k max. I have been look at ex-demonstrators etc and 1 year old cars to reduce the cost.
I really do like the look of the new Peugeot 3008 coming out in Jan. I even like the current model which seem to be very cheap considering the spec load on them. Some reviews did hint to low resale value though.

I get the comments about staying with an SUV means i won't get a fast or fun drive unless i buy big/expensive so to speak. I'm just bored with the IX35 so i want a change i guess.

So, also, the scaremongering from certain dealers about diesel has been around or a while now with the adding of the 'blue' stuff(?)
Is buying a diesel car to keep for the next 3 years not an issue?

OMG, you're happy with 38-40mpg?
Wow, no mate, I get about 46mpg from mine and considering other similar marques can do much better.....that's why I'm looking around.
Each to their own buddy but seriously a ford costing that much with that little mpg? No thanks, madness if you ask me.

Well, this is why I started the thread, to get opinions and advice.
As a general rule of thumb a dealer once told me to take 10% off the combined mpg figure to get a more accurate figure of the vehicles performance.
Looking at the pug 3008 the 1.6 diesel auto has the same figures as the manual.

I do about 16000 miles pa.

Been on honestjohn and just about everywhere else i can think of.
I'm picking up a 2016 plate 3008 on saturday to test until monday, so i'll get 1st hand experience.
The salesman actually said to me [quietly mind] that he dorve the 1.6 auto, liked the comfort, quite impressed with the acceleration, but just thought it was a 'safe' car, nothing special. And he doesn't get commission if he doesn't sell me a car.
But yes, the MPG figures and the look of it appealed to me. I like the fact that the cabin is almost built around the driver.
Then.....i popped over to Mazda and the CX-3 really caught my eye. So i'll test drive that one too.

Regarding MPG, if i can get a car that does 10mpg more than my IX35, then that equates to 128miles per tank, that's pretty significant if you ask me.
Looking at the 3008, HR-V, CX-3, all claim to do 'about' 65mpg combined. If i take 10% off for BS value, that still gives about 60mpg. Again a lot more economy than the IX35, that's one less fill-up every month.

I'm not totally hung up on TCO, i just want a 'nicer' car .... It may cost more to buy but monthly spend can be offsite somewhat by fuel economy savings.
Hope that makes sense.

EEEK!!!
3008 1.6l BlueHDi 120 S&S BVM6 17'' VLRR tyres
6.1 / 46.34.1 / 68.82.0 / 22.5
So, it really does about 46, nowhere near 68 ?????
Jesus, how can any manufacturer get away with that?

We all know they over-egg their figures, but to the extent of 30%, thats outgrageous.

Thanks Fox, that's been a real eyeopener.

So, do you think that the digital readings the car display are accurate or BS too? As i said my IX35 reports what look like an average of 46.8mpg.

Abyss,
yes i see your logic mate, thanks for the schooling :)
Thing is i know so many people who claim they get great mpg from their cars, and if figures were accurate then to most people this would be a big factor in deciding a car.
I had a vectra auto that did about 28mpg, it was utterly pocket-draining.

[Quote:]
Assuming 10k miles per year (7.8k commute):

46 MPG - £90.47 per month
38 MPG - £109.52 per month

That's £19.05 difference per month.[/quote]
I do about 1300 miles per month and spend approx £170 on fuel, each full tank takes me 525 miles (allegedly).
I struggle with hte maths sometimes, lol.

Well, i dipped my toes in the petrolheads crocodile swamp and instead of getting chewed up and spat out, i got nibbled, schooled and allowed to live....for which i'm very grateful guys, thank you for all your input (so far)

If my original question had been;
"I'm bored with my IX35, so want another car, preferably an SUV for a similar price, what would you recommend?"
How would that fare?
I had to move my sons Seat saloon this morning, i swear i cold feel the gravel scrape my a$$ it was that low. Kind of reminded me why i like SUV's i guess. I do suffer from a bad back.

The thing is, the list you made in your first post are all completely and utterly as dull as your IX35. SUV's generally are dull because they're mostly driven by school run mums who want to be able to cart their kids to school and reverse into walls in safety. However, you have picked out the dullest of the dullest in that list. They are all cars that your parents would have because they're reliable and mostly comfortable.
LMAO....ok, fair enough.

I guess the only "interesting" small SUV I can think of is the Range Rover Evoque http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201606225162223
I love the Evoque, but way out of my budget i'm afraid. :(

Might do as suggested and wait for a hybrid that peaks my interest.

Ok, so having thought about it, the main reason I like the suv is the higher driving position as I have issues with my back.
However, when I drive the works i3 (which is frikkin awesome), due to its fairly high roof I can raise the seat up to almost the same height as my ix35.
So im wondering if I could make do with a nice hatch that allows a lot of vertical seat adjustment to give me a similar seated position, whilst also offering some fun to drive aspects.
Any more advice on this please?

Yes, looks very nice and good spec.
Really hanging my nose over the Mazda CX-3 now.
But due to a disappointing resale value of my car i may have to wait until next year now :(
