If I buy a new 80gb hard drive for my toshiba laptop to replace the 30gb one in there now, will it be just a straight swap followed by re-installing windows & apps etc.. or will I have to fiddle about in the bios and stuff?
Should just be a straight swap. The old drive may be in a wee caddy which will need transferred but it's unlikely, most laptop manufacturers just use bare drives these days.
The laptop is about 2 years old, its a Toshiba Satellite A30, P4 2.8ghz, 512ram. Think I'll give it a try, if it doesnt see the full 80gb what does thyat mean? It wont work?
Yes, its a straight forward swap. Youll want a PATA drive (i.e. not SATA).
As said above, the HDD might be in a caddy, but i think on the A30's its underneath the CD drive, and it has two metal sliders on each side. Easy enough mind you, just put whatever is on the old HDD onto the new one.
