Replacing lenses but keeping the frames (specs)

I've got a pair of glasses I picked up about a year ago and haven't worn them since the first month because they gave me huge headaches immediately and made my eyesight worse.
I'm long sighted so only need them for using the pc but working in tech support means that I need them pretty much all day every day.

I went back to the optician to try and get them to sort it out but they seemed pretty useless.
Every time I went back they changed the prescription and made up new lenses but they got worse each time.

So basically, I've got some expensive glasses going to no use and headaches from staring at the screen all day.

I need to start wearing glasses but I'd rather just get a new prescription from a different optician and get the lenses replaced, keeping the frames.

Does anyone know of any places that would do this?
Or would they all make me buy new frames?

Cheers in advance.

Most opticians will allow you to just change the lenses in the frames, maybe smash them and tell them it was an accident ? :)

I think they should all do this for you, but they would be reluctant to do so.

I don't see any problem with asking them though, no point in spending X amount of £s on something you don't need.

I've done it before, but it was an independant optician.

Have an eye test at the new Opticians which will give you your new prescription and ask for new lens to be made up.

I dont see any probs with that. :)

yea i had a set of frames and they wondered if i wanted to keep them and just change the lenses which i did, only thing they said was if it was 2+ years old they'd advise against it i guess because the frames could be weak.

there are a few places online who do this for a cheap price, just been checking out glasses prices online, the ones i ordered this morning from a shop were £300, and I can get the same thing with same lenses for £150 online!

The little opticians in Monkseaton front street did that for my Mum a couple of weeks ago.

They seemed happy to do it for her and she had it all back the next day. :)

Don't see why they wouldn't do the same for you too.

There will be small outlets in your area that supply the bigger opticians, they actually make the lenses etc there and boots sell them on to you. You can usually pop into them and chat to them, they'll make your glasses for you for a fraction of the cost. example was me getting my boots "£260" glasses for £80 and a few years later getting the same lenses put into flexible memory frames for £60 since the prescription hadn't changed :)

you have to find these places though, I know of one in central scotland if anyone is interested :-P

Slightly OT, but here's a tip: do not try and repair expensive rimless glasses yourself!

Mine had a minor wobble on one side and I ended up pretty much trashing them. Lost a tiny piece of the screw assembly, scratched a lense with a pen knife and now they don't fix back together properly. And the wobble is ten times worse. :(
