Ok so my master socket is a bit old, and to be honest after I looked behind it there's a right pigs ear of extensions just twisted together with the main incoming line.
I'm with Sky for everything and I asked them if it was ok to upgrade my master socket to a new one with a built in filter they said it was ok, although i've read it belongs to BT not my "provider" but meh, I decided to just do it anyway.
After sorting all the wires behind the socket out and connecting them properly i've just put it all back together. It works! thank god for that!

Here's a little "before and after" info.
Downstreams:
Line Attenuation: Before - 38db After - 34.5db
Noise Margin : Before - 7.6db After - 7.2db

Not bad drop on the attenuation there, and I don't understand whats good for noise margin perhaps someone can tell me if lower or higher is better.
Won't bother posting upstream as it's down that really matters!
Sync speed before was 8909kbps (down from my 10mb a few months ago) so i'm hoping I can get back into double figures now. There's been a long running fault at my exchange sky say, so will see how it goes! Just away to call Sky to get them to re-run my dlm.

You want a noise margin which is low but not too low - I believe 7dB or thereabouts is Sky's target. If the noise margin is too low then the signal to noise ratio gets to the point where the router can't distinguish the signal and performance drops off a cliff (if the sync is even maintained). If it's too high it's simply a waste and indicates that the line could maintain a higher sync rate although that may be a deliberate trade off of speed for stability.

Sky's target SNR is 7dB for upstream and downstream.

Nice work with the wiring. It's criminal how people live with poor wiring because they're scared of messing it up. I've re-done all my friends and workplaces possible and the reaction you get taking phone sockets off the wall is one of horror!

They're more than happy when things get dramatically better though :D
