Hi,
I'm going to repalce my current motherboard with a new one, just an upgrade, nothing is broken. Would I be right in thnking that the OS will still boot once I have installed the new board? Even if it does, should I just boot straight from an OS CD as soon as I have changed the board and reinstall windows straight away?
Cheers,

If your are installing a new motherboard, and full OS reinstall is HIGHLY recommended, so stick the CD and boot from that once its in the case and it will boot just fine!

Backup docs and stuff first of course :)

^what he said,

although i was surprised when i accidentally booted mine up with all my new bits in, and windows 7 just installed a load of drivers automatically, and off i tootled.

i did do a clean install after a week or so.

+1

You might get away with not doing a fresh install but you're storing up a big pile of potential pain

Cheers guys, all went in ok, went for an immediate reinstall too. Only thing is now apparently my windows 7 product key can't be used to activate it :/
Maybe it'll work tomorrow.

Always best to do a fresh install . My wife refused to reformat when i built her a new pc and she just run her old op and for months i was sorting problems till she finaly let me do a fresh install

Keeping the existing OS install after a motherboard swap should only every be considered if its an emergency to get the machine running temporarily pending a full re-install.

I've seen a few online guides as to how to improve the success rate with doing this by removing applicable system components and drivers, but I would personally never bother.

Your license is tied to an installation ID associated with your old motherboard, to reset it you need to use the telephone activation service, assuming you have a retail license of course, if it's OEM the license isn't transferable.
