So my BFG 8800 has died, yeah its under lifetime warranty but from what I've read it can take months to get a replacement and they still havent even replied to the form I filled in online!

There is no way im going to be without a gaming rig over xmas so I figure I will buy a new card and stick whatever BFG give me in my wife's machine.

Question is what should I go for - would be nice to see a performance increase but I know my 8800 was still a decent card. Budget would be 140-170.

Rest of system is -
Core2 DUO E6300
Gigabyte 965P DS3

Thx in advance

I would personally wait for 2 months or so and 5850's will be around 180 i reckon, but you don't have that long to wait, so i would say a GTX 275 or a 4890.

so the 5770 would perform on par with my 8800gts then?only with dx11 support... scary that a 3 year old card is still able to match a 140quid card today.

No it wouldn't, ive just upgraded from a 8800gts 640mb to the ATI 5770 as the gts wasn't cutting it in L4D2, the 5770 is a lot faster, in most cases 50-100% fps gain in games, check toms hardware graphics charts for the numbers.

Great performance boost, smaller card & uses hardly any power in windows so i feel better leaving my pc on over night torrenting :p

wow some really impressive improvements there, seems quite a huge step up from the 8800(which I run now) as I'm looking to get a new card this one may fit the bill, later add a second one and will be future proof for quite a while

Yeah, was about a 30% average improvement going from the revised 8800GTS 512 to the 4870 512MB, and the GTS 640 is about another 10-20% slower than that.

Where I'd go would depend on how much of a gamer you are. If you want a decent stopgap, then try and find a cheap 4870, as these were going for about £80 recently, and then move to something like a 5850 for DX11 and another performance boost when they become more affordable and drop in price again in the new year (or when chip shipments pickup), OR, just get a 5770 now, which is about the same speed as a 4870 but with DX11.

If your motherboard is crossfire compatible, the 5770 isn't a bad option, as in crossfire supporting games it often holds up against a 5870, but the 5870 is of course more consistant.

Yeah my board is crossfire compatible thats why I'm looking at this card, I run the EVGA 8800GTS 640 (as me BFG died) ..so this looking good

thanks for the feedback guys - glad to hear that the 5770 would be an upgrade, looks like that would do me for a year or so when I will need to build a new machine anyway :)
