Hi all,

so the step-son has borked the optical drive on his xbox360 (grey hdmi model).

Can you guys advise on the best course of action please. I've heard its NOT as simple as just replacing the drive, as it's coded to the mobo of the console somehow

It's not the typical "tray open" error, he can put a game disk it, it spins for a couple of seconds then only gives the option to "open" the tray.
Therefore he can't play anything on disc.

If the costs are too high then he'll probably just buy a new one.....but he's jobless so that wouldn't be money well spent right now.

All advice appreciated. :D

You had the same error I was having, I found it easier just to puchase a similar drive and swap the lasers over, this negates the issues you find with having to code a new drive to your xbox.

The problem is that its the firmware on the drive thats tied to the xbox, so you would have to reflash the firmare to the new drive (im sure there are loads of guides on the net). Cant say it will work as i have not tried it myself.

Drive failed on my elite i went down the swapping drives route, wasnt to bad lots of guides on the net making it quite easy :D

Yeah replacing the drive isn't too difficult, i just did it with my xbox a couple days ago.

You do need certain hardware for connecting the drive to your pc so that you can flash the firmware, its not expensive but i think with the cost of the new drive and the required hardware it would be cheaper to replace the laser on the drive.

If your going the drive swap route there are plenty of guides out there. I got my replacement drive for £13 delivered, i used the CK3 Pro to connect the drive to my PC, i bought this a while ago so not sure how much it costs now. There is a newer version of the same thing called something differant which is done via USB.

Thanks for the advice fellas.
yoyo50, much obliged sir, thank you. Not sure what make/model it is, i'll ask junior to confirm.
When you say just needs pcb, what do you mean? Do i have to buy one, or lift it from the damaged drive?

Your pcb is on your drive it contains the drive key that will match your 360. Just disconnect the 3 ribbon cables and desolder six wires. Write them
Down in order if u need too. Very easy job

yoyo, apparently the drive is a DG-16D2S, which after a quick google search is a liteon drive.
If yours still works and you think it will be compatible, i'd be happy to take it off your hands for postage prices if the offer is still open.

Anyone that has replaced their drives on the xbox been banned from Live? Just wondered if Microsoft might see the slight difference in drive as being a hacked drive used to play backed up/pirated games.

Hmm...that would be good to know, although by moving the old pcb onto the new drive and flashing it to match the old one isn't that avoiding such a thing?

You don't reflash if your moving a pcb unless you want it modified, then you risk a ban. If you flash another pcb which a copy of your own it will also be fine, unless it's a spoofed drive of course

Well in my case it simply a borken drive(?) so acquiring a new one and putting the pcb from the old to the new should work out fine ??
