Replacing PlusNet router

Hi, last time I had a really advice so I'm back for a new one. I have a year old router from PlusNet but the speed inside the network is poor (WAN speeds to as I have up to 5Mbit/1Mbit as I am a bit far from exchange server or something). The problem is that when I try to copy a file from desktop PC to laptop it takes ages for a small file and copying a movie is not possible. I have to use USB stick to transfer files across. I am going to have a NAS at some point but until then I am thinking I need a better router. I live in a flat and the router is just 2 not so thick walls away. PC is on the LAN. I will be moving home soon and hopefully in the new place I will have better and faster internet so better router would be very good investment. What would you recommend?

I'd recommend you delay changing the router until you've moved and you know what Internet you're going to have.

You can fix your LAN transfer issues by adding a Gigabit switch (assuming the wired devices support Gigabit). Something like this would do.

Connect to one of the switch ports to the router ports and then connect your devices to any of the remaining ports.

Edit: Is the laptop wired or wireless? I saw NAS and thought it was a 10/100 vs Gigabit issue, but possibly not.

Laptop is on WLAN. If I find out how to share PC folder for MAC I could try it but I'm pretty sure it won't be much different. The motherboard unfortunately is not that new and it has only 1 x Gigabit LAN Controller.
