Replacing PSU TODAY, recommend me.

My OCZ Stealth Xstream 700W blew last night. I'm guessing it was my own fault as I'm running an OC'd phenom 2 and an OC'd GTX 480 through it.

Although it was odd how it ran fine for a while with the mentioned components and finally died when I wasn't doing anything particularly intensive to stress the PSU. All I was doing was playing a 2D game (Terraria) for a few hours before the problem (smell) started, then blew.

So that brings me here. I need to replace this PSU and I am going with a 1000W. Based on your personal experience and/or expertise, what would you recommend me to replace mine with?

This PSU will be bought today so it arrives with me tomorrow. I guess there is no set budget and I am not brand-loyal.

Cheers!

+1 for a corsair hx. Very good quality psu's. But tbh, with your spec you would be fine with a 750w unit. Youd only need a 1000w psu if you ever intended to go sli with the 480.

I wouldn't say that I'm insisting on a 1000W PSU, I was just thinkining about giving myself some headroom in case I choose to go SLI.

I appreciate the really fast reply.

Apart from the fact that that one you suggested is modular and extra 2 years of warranty, what is better about it when comparing it to this one?: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-218-CM&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

Unless I'm digging myself into the same hole again by buying a "cheap" model.

EDIT: Woah, a bunch more replies, thanks for the assistance. I don't think I will go SLI as I'm obsessed with the possibility of microstutter. So maybe an 850 modular.

That coolermaster is actually not that bad - the 800watt version of it was very highly rated in several indepth reviews - however the Corsair HX have a much more proven track record.

I'm not a great fan of XFX on a personal level - even tho their recent PSUs use Seasonic internals (which are good) but from what I've seen of XFX over the years I wouldn't trust anything made by them in my case.

I'm not sure if I should trust a PSU that's only 50W more that my blown up one, if I'm honest. Thanks though.

The 850W XFX is only £13 less than the CM Silent Pro 1000W. I don't think going modular is worth it to me since I coped just fine with my OCZ Stealth Xstream which had a LOT of spare cables.

Or am I being silly?

That antec that Orcvader linked is a pretty good unit. Installed one in my second x58, 460 sli rig last week. Very pleased with it. Run a corsair hx 850 in the rig in sig.

Okay, I've narrowed it down to these:

I was also eyeballing the OCZ 850W modular but I think I'll skip it considering you guys seem to think that my old OCZ shouldn't have blown with my current setup.

I noticed that the CM has a higher amperage. No idea if it's significant though.

I changed my mind on a modular PSU because I don't think I can be bothered rewiring everything as it was on my small, cheap case.

Personally out of the two I would go with the XFX simply because the manufacturer is Seasonic, a very reliable PSU manufacturer, and one of the best in my books.

The Antec I linked is also made from a good manufacturer, so there's no chance for it to blow up. Honestly with your setup a good 500w PSU will power everything fine. It all depends on the reliability of the PSU, and to be fair the StealthXstream and ModXstream weren't using the best components, so I would still recommend the 750w Antec I linked earlier as it has higher grade compnents.

Awesome, thanks. I've gone ahead and ordered one.

On a side note, anyone got any idea about the "80 Plus Bronze" ans "80 Plus Silver" the two are labelled with?

Fingers crossed that there's not anything wrong with the rest of my PC. Thanks all!

it's an efficiency rating. 80 bronze is >80% efficiency, not sure about silver but it's a little bit better. Better efficiency means lower electric bills (marginally), but also less energy converted to heat, so cooler PSU and less fan noise. Between bronze and silver, there isn't much to it tbh.

The 700 OCZ you had is not a true 700W BTW (not to current standards anyway, where most of that power is made available to the CPU and PSU).

I have an 850W corsair and it's been brilliant. However, if i was going to buy it again I would certainly get the modular version. Its like a snakes wedding in my case even with my best efforts to tidy it up.

I guess that teaches me for buying a cheap PSU. Thanks for the info.

Any idea if I'm covered for a replacement/refund? It has a 3 year warranty and it's not even half that age yet.

Aha, I agree. Mine was exactly the same, which is why I had a change of heart and went modular.
