Now I have no idea where to start.

I'm willing to spend £200-£300 (edit: looking at some costs on the web I shouldn't need to spend this much, though not sure!) to get something decent and already have a decent Sony head unit although if my budget can accommodate it I wouldn't say no to a new one!

I'll be keeping it for a few 2 years probably to build up my experience and NCB. It runs well and is in mint condition (plus has had the major design fault fixed - head gasket).

I don't want anything ridiculous...but I also have no idea where to start!

I listen to all types of music.

Yes mate.

Another thing - I could probably fit them myself however I'd rather get someone to do it.

I wouldn't bother with rear speakers. The Rover has quite decent sized front 6.5" speakers. The rears are 5" I think... a bit pointless. Here's what I'd go for with my money... (providing you don't want the hassle of mounting tweeters)

I've been out of car audio for years but am always hearing good things about the Hertz. Focal have been around for years and always get good reviews.

You'd want to make yourself some MDF rings and get a little bit of dynamat just to sharpen up the sound. Throw this into the mix to give them some ooomph...

And you'll find the speakers come alive.

As you've got an amp, you might as well get a sub. Something like this...

And a box should give you excellent bass output.

Throw in £30 for a good wiring kit and you'll be sorted.

If that's a bit overkill, those front speakers, a two channel amp, a few rolls of Dynamat and you'll be laughing.

I've got a Rover 200 and I wanted to change the speakers on it. Read online on the rover forums how to remove the door cards etc. At first I bought some coaxial alpines and left them in the car for a couple of weeks - they sounded better than the standard ones but I read that components were better and there is a gap in the 200 for the tweeters.

So I took off the door cards again and removed the coaxials and put in some Infinity 6020s I got off ebay for <£60. There was a noticeable improvement over the coaxials - so I would say get components.

I'm impressed with the sound (I also put sound deadening on the door).

It's a tricky job removing the door cards etc so I'm not suprised you're getting someone else to do it. The most time consuming part was cutting MDF rings to fit the speakers.

The rears are pretty pointless - I didn't want to buy an amp and sub so I got some 6x9's on the parcel shelf. They provide enough bass for me, I don't have my music loud enough for people on the street to hear it!

From what I can remember from when I was reading up about changing them in my 200, I *think* the 25's have a standard 4 screw fitting for the front speakers.

The 200's have a 3 screw fitting for some god-known reason and need a bracket when fitting aftermarket front speakers. MDF is recommended, tho I just modified a Corsa speaker bracket.
