Replacing the fan on my Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer with a Delta

Hello!

I`m planning on replacing the fan on my Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer with a Delta 120mm Focussed Flow Fan and a Zalman Fan Mate 2 Fan Controller that i`ll be monitoring outside of my case to keep the controller cool so it doesn`t burn out when using this kind of fan.

The thing I was wondering, how would I go about connecting the Delta to my motherboards cpu fan header just for the fan RPM speed readings only, and Not to control the fans speed or powering it up??? Would I need to purchase some kind of fan adapter cable that will allow me to do this, and if so which one would I need???

Do deltas come with plugs attached these days? Perhaps

Assuming it does, the fan will have a red, a black, and another wire. Red/black is +/0, the other one is rpm. So if you cut off the red and black ones next to the plug, you connect those two up to the fan controller and the remaining wire connects to the motherboard. Might be able to buy this, but since it's so low effort to make it electrical tape/heatshrink and, ideally, solder is the way forward.

Whats the power rating of the delta you're looking at? Shouldn't be that hard to find a controller that can run it, but connecting it to your motherboard directly would be brave
 
You should only connect those delta's either directly to the PSU via four pin molex, or to a Sunbeam Rehobus Extreme fan controller. They can pull up to 30W and will fry the Fanmate 2 (6W power rating) and would do a similar thing to your motherboard!
 
Potential divider across the 12V and ground lines on the molex, and the fan taken between third wire on the pot and ground? It'll work fine, not sure if it's difficult to find a potential divider rated for 30W though

The only problem is, I haven`t seen a online retaller in the uk that sells fan controllers capable of handling the power of the delta's, and I don`t really want to use this fan on full speed all the time because of the noise it makes.

Found it in black, within about 20 seconds of searching, for 15 quid.
Strangely it seems to be rated at 20W, and I could have sworn it was rated at 30.

Could just put a resistor in series with it then connect it to a fan controller. Failing that, I think you're making one :)

But are the online shops you found uk based??? because I can see plenty of online shops based in the us that does international orders but the cost of the delivery is very expensive.
 
easiest way to make your own voltage regulator is to use an lm317, a resistive divider as suggested above may work but I would not be happy with it for various electrical engineering reasons, I would do a resistive devier onto the adjustable pin of the lm317 and the potentiometer would then be used to adjust the output voltage
