Replacing Virgin Media Router

Hi guys,

I'm having issues with my Virgin Media Superhub 2 not wanting to open ports and generally being a complete pain. So I'm thinking about putting it into modem mode and adding a router.

I really have no idea where to even start looking though so I guess I'll just list what I need it to do and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Various family members will require access to wi-fi for Netflix etc...and the router will be upstairs, so I'll need something with good wifi capabilities to cover the whole house.

As far as LAN ports go I only use one for the PC and a couple for the consoles.

I can't really think of any other requirements....soooo........any suggestions would be great :D

Thanks in advance!

How good wifi is going to perform for you with any device can and will vary. Ideally you want the router in the centre of the house on the middle (if you had 3 floors) or bottom if its a 2 storie home. If it were me id go for a cheap router with gigabit ports and either some powerline adapters or a couple of wifi expanders rather than spending £100+ on an all singing device with unrealistic wifi claims. If that does not appeal then look here...
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/tools/charts/router/view for a bunch of reviews and wifi testing on each device.

DO NOT forget if you buy an AC device the computer type gear the other end will need to be AC capable for the improved speed oh and being AC it will decline over shorter distances.

Hi Vinno,

I done this a few years back now when I was having nothing but problems with my SuperHub.

I went for a 4 port Wireless TP Link Router.

The connection changed dramatically for me.

Always ran the superhubs in modem only mode and then ran my own routers off the side of these.

Currently running mine with a TP Link C7 Archer. Doing the job very well and not had a problem with the connection in years. Only issue I've ever had is routers popping their clogs every so many years.
