The 9-cell battery which was shipped for my XPS 1710 has been dead as a dodo for a about a year now, but I am keen on getting a replacement for it, since the rest of the laptop is still running as good as the day I bought it.

I had a quick look on the dell website, but the only compatible battery gets absolutely slaughtering reviews, saying that it only lasts 12 months and its so bad it should have been recalled - as is my experience with my current battery.

Does anybody know if it is possible to buy better quality replacement batteries from other stores and if they can be trusted?

I spotted a couple of laptop battery websites but I'm not sure how good they are, and if I'm just buying the same crappy battery but just from a different retailer?

Thanks,
Scott.

The reviews on the Dell webby are a bit daft, most of them state that the laptop was almost always run on mains power so why has the battery failed - because it was almost always run on mains power!

L-ion batteries need a regular discharge/charge cycle to keep them in good health, once or twice a week I let my XPS run on battery until the low battery warning shows and then charge it up again. Over a year of use and the battery is still good as gold, maybe I'm just lucky but it's worked for me.

Cheers,
John
