Repurpose "EOL" QNAP Devices

So hardware wise I've always sworn by QNAP, but over the years I've become increasingly frustrated with their policy on security updates and when they consider a device to be EOL when the hardware is still very much capable.

I get the technical reasoning behind it, and business reasoning, but it smarts having to either embrace security risks because they as a vendor won't supply critical updates for older devices, or that they end up retired and sat there doing nothing.

Has anyone experimented with repurposing them with an alternative or modified OS etc?

I haven't tried it with a QNAP NAS but I did prove that I could install XigmaNAS on my old Asustor box. The Asustor had an HDMI port to it was easy to plug in keyboard and monitor. I don't know how you'd attach a monitor without one.

Yeah both of my models don't have HDMI, I did manage to get a serial connection on the older one though with jumpers direct on the board. Will keep looking into it though as it is a frustration!
