I'm about to merge my old windows 11 PC into a new case with an HBA and 8 mixed HDD I have sitting around so that it can also be used to create a NAS. I'm pretty sure that I want to use Unraid for handling this part
The windows 11 machine currently runs HomeAssistant in VMWare workstation, so I'm currently planning on migrating that into a Unraid container too.
However, I'd like the ability to still be able to use Windows 11, preferably with proper RTX3080 GPU passthrough to a level that will allow running games if I locate the machine near the living room TV. I'm fine creating an image from my current boot drive (nvme) that can be virtualised, repurposing the nvme as storage cache, and I have spare SATA SSDs knocking around I can use for virtualising. I'm also fine having the virtualised windows 11 as a fresh install if needed.
What I'm stuck on, is if I doing all the above with Unraid as the host is a good idea, or if I should go down the proxmox rabbit hole instead
Any suggestions would be helpful, does anyone have experience with something similar?
Edit: I should say, I am an IT professional, starting with windows software development 20 years ago. However, my linux experience is not all that great, but I am happy learning how to do things.
