req:Raw in cs2 help pls

My brother has cs2 and it wouldn't recognise the raw files from his cannon 400d. I realised there was an update from the adobe site to address this issue and so I downloaded it and installed it into the file types folder etc.
The situation now is that Cs2 reveals the open raw file type but still does not open the file(s). It has been recommended by adobe to purge the cache file in adobe bridge. The only problem being he does not have adobe bridge installed.Anybody familiar with this issue or nkow what else can be done?

I have the 400d as well, you need to actually install the camera software to successfully read raw files, from the software you can transfer to photoshop or batch convert the files. As far as I am aware from my attempts and my time spent reading the CS2 update details the 400d raw format is unsupported by CS2.
 
Thanks for the input. Perhaps it would be better if he went out and bought adobe lightroom instead?
 
I have never used it to be honest, I would recommend maybe getting a trial copy and seeing if that works before buying it!
