Hi all,
I’m looking at putting together an entirely new system in the kitchen/dining room to act as a family PC/home working station/music player via Spotify mostly. Importantly, it’s got to be capable of blasting some tunes at the occasional soiree post-lockdown.

The problem is I’m a complete novice when it comes to audio equipment, and whilst I’m not looking for a serious audiophile setup, I ideally want to avoid any obvious weak links. Ordinarily I would just connect the headphone out from PC motherboard or soundcard to an amp, but after a little googling I started reading about DACs, headphone amps, optical vs analogue connections and my brain started to melt.

Can anyone offer some basic advice to a complete novice?

Below is a diagram of my assumed setup. I don’t own any component of it yet, so no compatibility constraints to worry about.

I have a Cyrus 6XPD amp which I connect my Mac mini by usb and 2 pcs via optical to the amp and it works great. I have tried using rca out- 3.5 mm to 2RCA out but I get a feedback humming from that.
There are a lot of amps now with either usb and or optical connections which would work for you

Right, I've educated myself and discovered the Cambridge Audio AXR100D is probably a good solution for my needs. Those being, digital input, phono input for turntable, subwoofer output. Seems like good value for money.
