Requesting advice - alternative to relying on personal hotspot internet?

Hey guys;

I'm looking for an alternative to my current internet which is provided through my iPhone 4S on the EE mobile network.

For almost two years I've used this device to receive a decent 3/5 bar signal; maximum of 10Mb/s down & 2Mb/s upload, which varies drastically. The only downsides to this service is the sometimes erratic ping & speeds along with not being able to do any router management such as port forwarding, etc. Unfortunately for me this contract is coming to an end in June and my previously planned alternative ('3' networks 'One Plan' with unlimited 4G data) is no longer an option since a change in March (no longer available to new customers).

I live in a place where fibre optic is not installed - even 9 years after the premises were built - so I am a bit stuck as to what alternatives would suit my needs. I would say I am a high data user (100GB/mo. minimum) but can handle traffic shaping/management being imposed, though would prefer not to. My usage is for competitive online gaming, video streaming and large data file transfer. I also use my current setup to provide personal hotspot connection to my tablet device while on the move, though am ready to sacrifice this for a more reliable and manageable home internet connection.

I know this is probably a lot but any suggestions/recommendations are welcome, thanks.

What's your postcode if you don't mind sharing? We could help look at your options a little easier then.

Thanks for the responses.

No phone line but it just needs activated.
Postcode NE32 3LD.
One Plan no longer has unlimited tethering for new customers from March, I have read.
Yea Mr.Stu, I do alright... ;)

ADSL broadband should do you just fine if up to approx 13Mb. Especially considering you can get FTTC later this year with near full whack speeds.

I don't see why you haven't already signed up with BT, Sky, Plusnet, whoever?

Thanks Sparx, hadn't known FTTC was due for June so I'll look into it. :)

My deal is truly unlimited text, calls and data plus handset for £30/mo so I concluded it would save me in the long run, plus the extra 3Mb isn't as valuable as the flexibility of mobile internet. I'll certainly look into it now though thanks.

If I were you, I'd sign up with your preferred supplier BT, Sky, Plusnet, whoever on an ADSL package then later in year once FTTC is available you can upgrade.

I recently moved to Plusnet FTTC who are cheap yet cheerful, if you are looking to keep your monthly costs at a minimum.

P.S. Don't rely on having FTTC at the end of June, it's just a holding date from Openreach who will move this forward this without a doubt. The good point is at least you are very much so in the pipeline for having FTTC.
