so i was playing COD4 yesterday, with my 7600GS, and i was playing at my native res, 1280x1024. i have to put allt he settings to low, or off and it looks normal to me, as i had been playing with it like that from the begining. then i wanted to see how it looked in all its glory, but still playable. so i lowereed the res to 600x480. DISGUSTING!

well everyting looked amazing, but it was so pixelated, even with 4xAA, and it was soo fuzzy. the text was HUGE, and you can harldy snipe, as stuff far away is made up of crap.

i had never seent the Golden Degal, look golden. to me it always looked liek a **** stain on my toliet. IT ACTUALLY LOOKED GOLDEN, and the shine it has in winter crash. AMAZING.

so my Question is...

do i keep the low res/high candy, or do i go the other way round, and what would you choose.

If you can drop the res a minute amount E.g. 1680x1050 to 1440x900 or 1280x1024 to 1024x768.

Why would you go from 1280x1024 to 600x480?

I'm sure a 7600 could handle 1024x768 at high/medium settings, right? A friend of mine plays at 1440x900 high/medium on a 6800GS (mind you he isn't very sensitive to frame rate changes).

I'd always try to run native res.

Alternatively, can't you get your monitor to play the lower res with no scaling? (Might need to check graphics drivers too) Yes, you'll get a black border round the screen, but you'll not get the fuzziness and can up the graphical quality sliders.

haha i dear not even comment :p but with that card you shouldnt run higher than 800x600 if you want decent fps, now ill hide.

Good, go hide.

7600 is still Ok for most things, just have to find a balance of looks v's performance.

Depends on the res really
1024x768 is still managable with AA and AF, so eye candy if noticable above res.
below that, eg. 800x600, it's terrible, Played through cod4 sp on maxed /most high/enabled, 4x aa and 800x600.
Then replayed it @ medium-low, 2x aa and 1280x1024.

The 1280x1024 was MUCH nicer, everything far far far sharper and nicer.

On a tft 1024x768 can cause problems due to the wrong aspect ratio though like here in AOE2:

This only happened on the fog of war bits but with a wrong aspect ratio it will cause problems on some colours.

So tbh, if you got a tft, use native res, if you've got a crt, drop to 1024x768 and max eye candy, but don't go lower on res.

What about playing it in windowed mode?
I play it at 1024x786 or something like that. It may be smaller but i still have decent textures and detail. Compared to 1280x1024 on low.

800*600 isnt too bad, depends on size/type of monitor.
i could happily play games at 800*600 on a 19"crt...but i wouldnt like to play at less than 1680*1050 on my 22"lcd....i'd rather drop detail level on a 20"+ lcd.

for me its res
1680x1050 on a 2600 pro with no eye candy
hope to crank it up with a BFG GTS i got my eye on...

One of the inherent flaws with TFT screens is their reliance on native res. I've never gamed in anything other than native res on a TFT (unless the game didn't support it).

If you can't upgrade to a CRT or better gfx card, then my recommendation would be to stick with 1280x1024 low settings. Also make sure you overclock your card to the max.

always try to use native res, 1920x1200, have to drop the aa/af a bit or sometimes just do without it, crysis is probably the only game where i would drop the res to 1680x1050.

how do i do the border thing?

i get like 20fps avg, which i see no slowdown so im fine with it at 1280x1024.

Depends on your monitor. On my NEC, in the menu, tools, I set 'Expansion mode' to off or disabled.

In my ATI driver panel "Digital Panel Properties" I select "Use centred timings" instead of "Scale image to fullpanel size".

well i have nvidia drivers. on vista 32. anyone got any clue?

ill try the monitor. i have an LG flatron M1710A.... nop i dont see that option, but there are some screen options that are grayed out...:(

btw i put the res up to 1024x786. txt is still big, but looks a lot less fuzzy. still something about long range i dont like but thats fine. had to drop the 4xaa to 2xaa and had to lower some other textures and yes options to no, but lighting is still superb. nice shadows, and they actually help in the game when camping (defending in SD) and G.Degal looks Golden :).
