I'm happy with the job that the stock HSF does at cooling this card but I was wondering if it's worth taking the cooler off appying some AS5? Does anyone have any positives resutls from doing so? I'm sure I read somewhere that the stock paste doesn't even cover the entire core in some instances.

When I took the stock HSF to replace it with VF900 the core had very little thermal grease on it and only covered around half of the core itself. The rest of the core was totally clean! So I would take it off and re-apply some compound anyway.

Unsure about a X1800, but I've done the trick with both of my X1900GTs.

I've achieved a 5C decrease in temps on my Connect3D card, and a 3C drop on my HIS card.

The connect3D card was the most significant, as at stock core/mem/fan speeds and heavy gaming my card would easy hit 88+ C which was too hot for me.

After applying the As5 and a little settle in period, I was getting 82C - 83C instead.

I then went the whole hog and did some BIOS editing on my cards, and even with VGPU upped to 1.4v in 3D mode I dont see higher than 75C now (nb. custom fan profile).

Cool, sounds like it might be worth a try. I'm hoping that the temp drop might be significant enough for the fan not to spin up as loud when under load!
