I have pda which every time the battery goes flat the pda resets back to factory settings and i lose all my data, is this normal?

What happens if you turn the pda off, leave it for 5 mins then turn it back on (obviously with battery charged), does it keep your settings?
xda forums are a good alternative help site if you are stuck.

If it's running Windows Mobile 2003 or earlier then yes that's normal.
If it's running Windows Mobile 5 or later then no it should keep your settings.

Reason is with WM2003 part of the OS is kept in RAM. When the battery runs out any personal settings are lost.

WM5/6 devices store those settings in ROM and the same settings are preserved if the battery dies.

if i turn the pda off and the battery still has charge it still retains settings/data

Thanks Mujja :)

What PDA is it, for some of them you can now get unofficial ROM uogrades to WM5.

As brendy mentioned, check xda-developers for more info.

as mujja says , it's normal .I have a Navman PIN570 [I think AcerN35 clone], running WM2003 and I've let the battery run down a few times and I've lost all my programs . Easily put back but still a farce .I bought some solar chargers from ebay so I have no excuse not to charge it up. In the settings you can close down the programs running . Theres one or two nice battery level reminder programs for these things , I use Batti , it's a coloured bar across the top of the screen to tell you the charge level and theres a warning tone if it drops too low .My Ubiquio401 phone/PDA runns on WM5 and as said never loses settings or programs even after a soft re-set.
