I've been in a small warehouse job for almost two years, up until the last few months it was going OK, everyone friendly, helpful and buy me Christmas/birthday presents.- Although they have always been very pushy with questions about my life outside of work yet very cagey about discussing theirs with me and even more cagey about answering fairly basic questions about the company and how long they plan to go on for etc.

Only four of us work at the company- three are directly in charge of me so this has been very tiring at times. The year end figures were completed last month and the company was 18% down compared to previous years. Since then i have been getting a lot of hassle from the three people who work above me to a point where i have been feeling stressed and suffering from anxiety. They have been wanting me to work even more quickly than usual- i work quickly anyway to tight deadlines. They have been checking up on me a lot and have been made to feel bad if i cant complete the work in time.

The others work flexi- time and work on the office/advertising side of things while i process the orders and do the manual work. They pretty much do as they please and don't work normal office hours and when they do arrive there are many answer phone messages and emails to respond to before starting anything else. I feel like they are putting pressure on me even though, it looks to me, like they are possibly 18% down due to them not putting the work in to gain the customers or retain customers etc.

They are constantly leaving work to view cars, houses, to get there hair done, and various other non work related things. I have tried to talk to them about how i feel i cant work any quicker and i have told them i am no longer happy in the job.

To that end i am resigning from my job post with immediate effect after i have worked tomorrow. I have written a long letter along with my formal resignation letter to explain again why i am unhappy. I am supposed to give 1 months notice but this will make it so awkward and they will get to me even more.

Has anyone ever resigned with immediate effect and did you get into any trouble over doing this?

In my resignation letter i stated that i am leaving due to the circumstances of my recent negative work life and also that i am taking on immediate employment elsewhere. Does anyone think i should leave the second bit out about the new job?

I have another job all lined up to start on Wednesday and i don't need a reference from this employer for the new job.

Any advice/ideas would be greatly appreciated

Leave the bit about the new job out, that's nothing to do with them.

Can they not sue for losses if you leave immediately, i.e. against your contract? Also there might be something in your contract about going in to a competitor company (if you are).

They probably wouldn't bother taking it legal if you do just leave, but just saying.

I am thinking i should leave the bit out about new job too-as you say it has nothing to do with them- also even if i had no job to go straight into i would have left anyway due to the stress they caused, so the new job is secondary to the actual reason i am leaving.

Thought i would put a post out here to see if anyone has had a similar experience at all.

They could potentially sue but hopefully not- the two owners would have to agree with each other on this. Agreeing with each other on anything is normally a difficult task for them as they constantly argue.

How much holiday do you get a year? Also, you can be 'sick'. If you do have responsibilities that need to be handed over then you should perhaps think about it. This is a company that until recently treated you well for two years.

I get 20 days holiday a year new leave year started on 1st of feb. I could be sick but id have to be very 'ill' to be off for one month and would prob get caught out. Good idea though

Keep the written part brief. A rant won't get you anywhere and could come back to haunt.

They won't go legal unless they like throwing money down the toilet. Lawyer will cost a lot more than they could ever get back.

A small struggling company wont take you to court, I would have sent a letter to the md or someone very senior explaining how badly behaved your other colleagues have been in relation to actually doing their jobs.

They might not be too bothered that they haven't treated you well, but if they are challenged to prove what they have actually been doing workwise the last few months and have very little to show for it, well, they are likely to get a rocket up the bum to buck up.

The way he has explained it there are only 3 other employees so the "md or someone very senior" must be included in the group of people he would be complaining about. That's not to say that raising his grievances in writing prior to resignation should be ruled out, but this type of organisation setup looks best left behind to me unless there are potential opportunities there (more seniority, share options etc). It just feels wrong to me, a warehouse will always need someone doing fulfilment so unless they hire/outsource someone to take over the OP's current responsibilities, he will likely be stuck there indefinitely with all the responsibility falling on his shoulders and his alone with no end in sight for the stress and anxiety.
