Resolution above the default. Problems?

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 913N. It's a 19" 8ms LCD monitor and the default resolution is obviously 1280 x 1024.

I formated my computer recently and before I installed my graphic card drivers I noticed I could use much higher resolutions than the monitor's default. All of them showed some screen saying that it wasnt Optimum Mode and after a few seconds they brought me back to 1280 x 1024. But when I chose 1600 x 1200 the box did not appear and I could use my computer normally with that resolution until I installed nVidia's driver and then that mode was hidden and I could only choose up to 1280 x 1024 again.

The nVidia's driver has an option where i can force a mode that's not the monitor's default and i can put it to show 1600 x 1200 @ 60hz with no problems and the "wrong res" box doesn't appear.

The screen when put in 1600 x 1200 interpolates but it's not worse than the interpolation of 1024 x 768, so it doesn't really bother me specially after i turn on Clear Type all the text stays smooth and I'd really like to use this resolution since I don't think 1280 x 1024 is big enough for me.

Anybody knows if this can cause any physical problems for the monitor? I'd imagine it wouldnt since it's only interpolating with the already existing pixels and the quality of the image really doesn't bother me. So my only worry is if it could damage the screen in any way.

Any comments will be appreciated

Thank you

I'm suprised to read that it didn't just display an 'out of range' warning (and perhaps even leave you blind to what is happening on your computer), but apart from stretching the image vertically there shouldn't be any ill-effect.

No guarantees, but I can't see how. Out of interest which scaler are you using? I'm guessing the display adapter scaling.

generally not a good idea to force a TFT above it's maximum resolution which for the Samsung 913N is 1280 x 1024. If the screen is only interpolaating it down to 1280 x 1024 anyway, is there really any reason to run it at 1600 x 1200? Is the image not sharper and more stable at 1280? I wouldn't recommend running it higher for two long, it can damage the screen in the long run.
