A friend of mine has been having a problem with his resolution, he wants 1680x1050 on his Samsung sm 226bw but the biggest res he go upto is 1600x1200. The gfx is a hd5770 and he's installed the latest drivers but it hasn't solved the problem, he used to do something before to get 1680x1050 but he's forgotten.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Where is he selecting his resolution?

1600x1200 is a 4.3 aspect ratio, sounds to me like he needs to select 16.10 aspect to get the widescreen resolutions to appear.

According to the Samsung site, it should be able to go 1680x1050. Have you tried using Catalust Control Center?
It shouldn't matter, but is he connected by DVI or VGA?

Is he using the actual Samsung monitor driver or just the Generic Plug and play monitor driver. If it is the latter this could explain why not all supported resolutions are available.

Is he using XP by any chance? I know a few people had this problem on XP and had to manually enter the resolutions in regedit to get them working ;o
