Im trying to hook my laptop up to our widscreen TV in the lounge via VGA cable

All works ok but the picture on the TV is sort of overlapping and quite garbled, is this a just a case of the TV's VGA socket being dusty or is it to do with the res on the laptop?

Any help appreciated :)

None really i just have the option when going through the channels on the remote for VGA, it pops up no problems but seems to be overlapping itself and slightly garbled is the best way to describe it :/

We're just lacking a bit in information...assumedly you're talking about an HDTV (since it has a VGA-in), which likely makes your native resolution 1366x768 (although it could be 1280x720, 1280x768, 1920x1080 or a variety of odd resolutions if it's plasma). If you're feeding the TV a non-standard resolution it won't display it correctly. Check your manual for supported resolutions, although it will almost certainly include 1024x768, so give that a shot (as unideal as a 4:3 resolution may be).
