I'll explain everything before posting hopefully helpful images of my issue.
Basically, I gave my dad and old screen of mine, a 120hz AW2310. I wanted to connect it to his ancient Dell Dimension 2400, so I bought a PNY 8400 GS because it suited my needs which were:
1. PCI compatible, the only expansion buses on the 2400's mobo.
2. A DVI-I port, so I could connect it to my dad's 2400.
Now, I've done done the below multiple times in various orders in an attempt to get it working:
I've disabled and uninsalled the onboard VGA adapter device and driver via device manager
I've also disabled the onboard GPU by choosing 'auto' instead of 'on' in the BIOS, these were the only two options and it's supposed to use an add on GPU if it's on 'auto'
I've installed the latest 270.61 drivers which state support for the 8400 GS
However despite all of this, I'm still having issues with getting the desktop to be fully functional. It does not display in any resolution above 1280x1024, it leaves giant black bars in between the bezel/desktop and although far less important, it isn't using 120hz. So I'm left thinking the GPU actually isn't in use bar being a medium for the output of image to the DVI-I cable. GPU-Z even reports the clock at '0 hz'. Videos look as if they're being decoded by the P4 processor too.
I'm really hoping someone can tell me why I'm encountering all these issues and what I can do to fix them. If anyone's had a similar issue and resolved it successfully I'd really appreciate some insight. Anyway, here are some images to show exactly what I'm talking about.
Here's the black frame, it extends around the perimeter of the bezel/desktop.
And here's the menu for changing res.
