Say you have a 1920x1200 Resolution, 24" monitor and you want to play a game that cant go that high, say only 1280x1024 how does it look?

well it depends really. If the screen supports aspect ratio control / 1:1 pixel mapping then you can play the game at 1280 x 1024 in the middle of the screen, with black borders around the edge. You can also allow the screen to interpolate the image to either fill the whole screen (which would distort the aspect ratio in this case), or otherwise to fill as much of the screen as possible but keep the aspect ratio. As a rule of thumb, modern interpolation outside of native res is generally pretty good in games, but some clarity will be lost. Screens with 1:1 pixel mapping are the best option as you can choose what suits you :)
