I am looking at buying a 19" TFT with a budget of ~£200. What kind of response times am I looking for if I want to be able to watch a film and play a game properly? Do I really need to go for 2ms?

I am not going to be playing online first person games and have an elitist attitude about it (like when I was a student), just normal relaxed one player gaming.

for movies you dont really need the latest and greatest response time, but it can help sometimes for gaming. I'd say for most users anything around the 8ms or below mark is going to be perfectly adequate. See if you can narrow your choices down a bit

Thanks for your answer :)

I forgot to mention I also do a lot of photo editing.

Now, colour reproduction is not critical to me as it is to a lot of photographers. I find using a histogram and other tools in photoshop I have the proper information about the image without having to confirm it visually to a huge degree of accuracy.

What I mean is I am perfectly happy editing my photos on my laptop screen (Asus A6G) and have no issue with colours. What I would mind though is if theres a big difference in brightness the moment you look at the screen from a different angle, which is the case on my laptop.

How are TFT monitors around the £200 range in this respect?

not great really. Around the £200 mark they are all going to be TN Film based which is a technology a little limited in it's viewing angles. You would probably find it not as bad as on your laptop, but might be worth you trying to see some TN based screens in the highstreet first

I see. I'll have to do a little window shopping, probably in Spain...I failed to mention I am based in Gibraltar. Gibraltar stores overprice all technology and stock very small selections. Although UK Online stores are a typical choice for me and I buy from OCuk often, monitors might just be a little too expensive to ship as they are rather bulky per unit price.

That said, having a look at the sites of spanish stores near my area I have found;

SAMSUNG 19" SM920N - 249 euros
HP LCD vs19b 19 - 279 euros

That Sammy is popular and well established, would be a good choice in the price range, and probably one of the better ones available for ~£200
