hi guys, i have got my pc all set up, with monitors etc, but now im on the booting, i have a WD 1TB SATA 6.0 hdd but the sata cable was just a old 1 in 1 of my old computers (not built), and most of my pc is new, so would i need to buy a new sata cable because its just this thats the problem, i also think its the cable
 
What's your spec and are all the components new, 2nd hand or mixture?

Also, I'm not entirely sure what it is you're asking - are you asking if you can use an old SATA cable? - Yes you can but not advised if you're unsure of it's reliability - especially on a new build.

Are you having a boot problem? If you are we will be able to better advise you when we know the motherboard and ideally the rest of your system spec and OS.

But if the SATA ports are numbered pick 0 (or 1 if there's no 0) - don't use any third party SATA controllers on your first boot. Then select the drive within the BIOS.
 
my specs are kinda a mixture, i bought 2x8gb ballistix ram and a p8h61 r2.0 + i5-3570k second hand, then i had the rest new, rx480 gigabyte, wd 1tb hdd, 650 gold psu (evga) and thats it.. and i dont have an operating system, could it be that?
 
Thanks for the spec - but I'm still a bit confused as to what the exact problem is you're experiencing. Detailing the exact problems you're experiencing will really help (is this your first build?).

  • Are you unable to get into the BIOS?
  • Can you get into the BIOS but you're unable to select your drive in the BIOS?
  • Or, as you have no OS installed, you can't boot past the BIOS and wondering why?
  • Or other?
I think you're asking how to select your drive as the first boot device - which means you can get to the BIOS (my first post should have helped?). If you've done that and expecting it to do more without an OS installed then I'm afraid you're expecting too much. You need an OS.

If I've misunderstood more info on your exact problem would be great.

I replied to some of your other threads - while you were compiling your build.

Bearing in mind you had a mixture of old and new parts you had pretty successful build for a first attempt.

Just for your info - you will always need an OS installed- be it Windows or Linux - once the system is built.

The only thing you will be able to access without an OS is the BIOS. But it's all part of the learning process of your first build - so congrats.

First build, hybrid parts and runs first time - result.
