My dad has had the dreaded email from Microsoft to say he needs help, which he's opened and it's locked out his laptop, deep joy!

Last time this happened it looks like I saved a system image, about 30Gb of SWI, DSI files etc which I saved on my Synology.

Question is - how do I turn this 30Gb into a bootable USB or DVD that I can plug into the laptop and restore from?

Do you know what software was used to create the backup?

Normally they have an iso you burn to USB to boot from to load the gui and then point it to the backup you done to restore from

If you don't have any joy on a restore, you could head over to Bleepingcomputer's ransomware forum and supply them the details. They're very knowledgeable on these things :

Thing is proper Av won't protect someone against lack of tech-savvy, the better solution than buying a piece of software is to educate him. no piece of software will protect against a lack of common knowledge when it comes to these things. If they did then tech support for malware/ransomeware etc would not exist.

Experience has taught me that some older people can be told a thousand times and it never seems to sink in. :D
