Restoring IPhone 3G to early OS

Hi Folks,

I have an iPhone 3g on IOS4 and it's unbearable. I have found a few guides online on how to revert it to an earlier version but I have a query about it.

If I back up the phone as it is now, restore to an earlier version and then restore all the contacts/ emails/ messages etc does it also go back to being ios4? I presume that since the backup of the phone is on ios4 the restore will also put ios4 back onto it.

Is this the case? Ideally I'd like all my contacts/ messages etc that I have on it now but have the software as an earlier version.

What happens if you do a deep DFU restore without backing up?

My mate said his jailbroken 3G is just as quick as it was before iOS 4

4.1 should be out soon enough, it's abit of a hassle downgrading IIRC.

You cant restore your phone after putting it back to 3.1.3, the restore will fail if the backup was done on a phone running 4.0

Luckily I had a backup still on iTunes which was faily recent, done the day before I updated to 4.0. I used that after putting my phone back to 3.1.3
