Restoring WhatsApp chat to new phone

Had a Samsung phone that has water damage and won’t switch on or charge. I’ve temporarily borrowed an iPhone. When I installed WhatsApp it said do you want to restore from iCloud I said no as I don’t have an iCloud account. It doesn’t have my old WhatsApp messages because of this. My question is if I get a new android phone when I install WhatsApp will I be able to restore all my old chat. Where does it get backed up to? If I have my broken Samsung factory reset will I still be able to get the old messages. Everything else like photos and contacts I have backed up to my Google account.

Secondly, how do I back up WhatsApp on the iPhone, will I be able to restore my messages from the last few days without affecting restoring my chat from the old phone?

Assuming you had backups enabled, it saves to Google Drive (although Meta plans to change this). Using another Android phone will allow it to restore from Google drive.

As for transferring it over to iOS, you'll need to do this which does require a working Android phone: https://faq.whatsapp.com/686469079565350

I don't think it'll preserve the messages you already sent/received on the iPhone.
Thanks yeah I read that it backs them up to Google drive. I’m certain that I selected for daily back up. Just hope it was backed up to Google drive not my phone. I read that you can see in your Google drive app but I can’t see anything that say’s about WhatsApp, on the other hand somewhere else said you can’t see it as it’s encrypted.

I guess I’ll just have to see what happens. Regarding the messages on the iPhone could I first try restoring from Google drive and then transferring my current messages from iPhone or could that end up removing the first lot of messages i restored?
