Playing obilvion at 1360x768 Very High quality setting and AA at max I was hitting 85C causing the fan to come on at 100% (my custom fan settings)
i've got it set so at 80C it comes on at 60% cant remember the other settings off hand...
But back to the point...
With the Artic Silver 5 Compound now on, and the same fan settings the max i'm hitting now is 81C thus not ever causing the fan to hit 100%

By the way these are not my usual running temps, its just the hot weather.

So yeah i reckon on average my temps are down 3-5C using artic silver 5. Not much but shows its better than the stuff ATI use.

Trouble is you have just void your warranty. First thing they will check if you have to send it back is the goop. Happened to my friend with a 1 month old Nvidia card.

Nice temp reduction though

well i just wanted to try that, next step will probably be to fit a zalman fan.. Not keen at all on this stock cooler, it's a pain in the ass hearing it spin up and down all the time. I'm guessing the Zalman is much quieter.

I'd seriously consider getting an Accelero X2 instead - at high heat loads - ie with your beast - it is considerably better than the Zalman!

The standard goop on the x1800xt I remember looking like AS5(silver coloured). After I abused and killed the card, I sent it back for RMA. I had of course used water cooling on it, so I applied some white goop I found and mounted the original cooler. I got a brand new card in return :D

EDIT: Btw, I didn't get better results after applying AS5

Where did you read that? Last comparison I saw showed the Zalman to be superior to the X2 even on an X1900.

tbh it seems to be rather split, some reviews favour the X2 some favour the VF-900.
although i hear that the X2 coolers just push hot air onto the mainboard and don't do a great job of circulating it or getting it out of the case?

personally i use the Zalman VF-900 cooler on my 7800GT and it does a wonderful job.

anyway... 80+ degrees C... surely that cannot be right!?!? thats stupendously hot!

It is hot actually. Even when my room was pushing 30 odd degrees my temps stayed below 70 even while overclocked. And I play Oblivion with all the candy :D

How long are you playing for? Seems to me like days at a time lol :p

While opinion is divided on performance - considering the X2 can be had for half the price of the Zalman (about £12 in some places) it certainly made my mind up! :p

Hmmm... but if you really want to spend the cash and get the bling:

Thermalrigh v-1 ultra (Yes - you can attach a 120mm fan to it - imagine a 240v Panaflo on that  )

Well on my X1900xtx the goop really did look like they had used AS5.
