Resuming windows then turns off

Hello. My mate has a laptop which when he turns it on it says resuming windows then turns itself off. Im thinking a fresh install as he has all the original discs. However he wants photo and music to be kept so I need to connect his laptop HDD to my desktop PC in order to back up the music/pictures he wants to keep.

He has a dell inspiration m5040 so would the HDD be a Sata connection? Ive worked on PCs before but only desktops.

has he tried taking the battery out, waiting then putting it back in, then booting? If hes hibernated it then it may just be trying to resume where it left off and failing.

Also has he tried safe mode?

Hes rubbish with computers mate. Ile try it for him
