Could be wrong but I think OEM come without the stock CPU Fan.

Edit sorry read the post the wrong way round! Doh!

retail are obviously more exensive because of the heatsink and longer warranty.

the fact that atm it's £2 more than OEM is more to do with current pricing on OCUK.

most of the time, OEM are 5-7% cheaper.

3770K is old(er) CPU (not sure if EOL), maybe that's why.

check 4770K for example.

Retail = box, heatsink and 3 year warranty.
OEM = Just CPU and 1 year warranty.

The retail version is cheaper. Am i missing something here?

ok, the message seems not to be getting across.

3770K is on old socket - pricing may be abnormal, because of various reasons.

check 4770K, current CPU, where pricing of retail and OEM units is normal - OEM being few % cheaper.

If that's the only reason then fine but it still seems crazy to me. No reason to buy OEM when you can just bin the heatsink and box and get a longer warranty for less money.

The reason is simple business economics.

When you buy stuff in you pay the trade price. Then you add VAT, and put your % on top = the price you sell it for. Margins are very small.

So,this simply indicates that the tray versions are probably older stock and cost OCUK more than the retail units.

That's all, nothing sinister going on.

The retail will be getting discounted to get shot of them, there's hardly any OEM left and they don't take up much space in the warehouse. The retail boxes take up far more space that could be used for newer product.

I am looking at getting a new CPU and wondered why the cost of some retail CPUs are more expensive than the OEM versions. This isn't just limited to OcUK. I dont need a heatsink or the box and you get a longer warranty with the retail version.

Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM £251.99 inc VAT

Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £249.95 inc VAT

Thanks.

If you have the board, get the 3770K Retail. The extra warranty is what you need.
If you plan to buy a motherboard though, consider a 4770K for the extra £10.

"stock" HSF are always pants, and is good they got abolished from the newer products. (eg Ivy-E retail has no cooler).

As for the price difference, Jokester is right.

It's possible they're fighting a suspicion that the OEM cpus have been speed binned, so they're trying to encourage people to buy retail thereby reducing the chance of someone returning a poor over clocker with the suspicion the seller knew it was weak.
