Retail backlash against Steam

The head of sales at a big-name digital service provider agreed: “At the moment the big digital distributors need to stock games with Steam. But the power resides with bricks and mortar retailers, they can refuse to stock these titles. Publishers are hesitant, but retail must put pressure on them.”

Since when have retailers cared about PC gaming, oh since they started doing digital sales too. Seems a bit of an empty threat considering if you walk into most high street stores the selection of pc games is at best poor.

As for their digital services, I wish them luck. Last game i bought online from the purple place I had to wait 2 days for a key to be emailed to me. I got so fed up waiting I had to download a key gen in order to play the game I had paid for

Steam is leading the pack because they are the only ones doing it well. They are much more than just a games store.

Retails seems to just be scared because they simply can't compete, if anyone is going to be leading digital distribution I'm glad its Valve, rather them than EA, Activision or anyone else.

Steam is great and i doubt i would move to another digital provider anyway. Steam has no doubt increased the sale of pc games and there will always be people selling hard copies so not stocking a game would surely have more impact on the retailers.

Gaikai CEO David Perry told MCV Steam could become the games-equivilent of iTunes, where it dictates the terms of the market, not the other way around: “Steam has made it so easy for everyone and they have lots of users. But how long do you wait before you take control of your own digital strategy? Like with iTunes, at some point it’s going to be too late"

I doubt steam can become as poor as itunes

Steam atm is currently having a laugh with some of their prices, the only good thing about Steam, are the fact it's convenient and also the sales.

I thought this was why Steam kept pricing up originally, so that retailers didn't cry?
It wasn't "fair" if a game could be bought cheaper through Steam than from an actual shop. Something like that...

The PC sections of all shops now is pitiful. To hell with the high street retailers.

They have a mild point I suppose, in that we're stuck with it but, hey... It works, well. It's not going to up and disappear over night leaving you with nothing. There are some solid prices/deals to be had.
I can not say I have the same faith in high street retailers. Bit of trouble or not enough profit? Project canned.

I love the fact that when someone starts something new and ends up doing it so well that they become dominant, they are all of a sudden evil and must be stopped.

Pathetic.

Maybe if the big name high street stores actually stocked more than 5 games for the PC market and employed people who's gaming knowledge went further than Guitar Hero then I'd bother going into the store.

Retail dropped PC games when the second hand market became so important for them. You can't sell most PC games second hand due to DRM, so they can't make huge profits selling the same copies over and over again like they can with console games.

Now they're seeing Steam taking the customers who gave up on high street stores due to an almost complete lack of PC games on the shelves, and are complaining.

As someone else said it's like a kid throwing away a toy because they hated it, then complaining when another kid picks it up and starts playing with it, having a good time.

Perhaps if Steam were to release Steamworks without the need for the desktop client (if you don't want it) some of this would go away. Kind of how GFWL does it and how I assume Steamworks is going to work on PS3, you get the social aspect and the DRM but no client and more importantly for Steams competitors you don't get the Steam store.

Personally I think Steam is brilliant, they have the market dominated for a good reason, I'd love to see more Steamworks games... but, every distributor needs competition, it is in our interest as gamers that Steam still does have competition. Perhaps Valve should look at this warning seriously and offer part of the service without forcing it's competitors to also sell the Steam store.

why dont stores just stop selling games , start selling "game cards" like time cards for wow etc but they unlock a game on steam.

maybe stores would make less money on them but they could try to get an agreement wherre any unsold cards can be bought back for the price they paid.

no sale = no loss

stores happy , steams happy , customers are happy, they could even sell the cards before release because steam timelocks the game anyway

I really ****ing dislike it when people say this.

STEAM DO NOT SET THE PRICES OF THE GAMES.

Steam, is brilliant and it has come a long way since it first started, amazing bit of software imho, don't see how people can complain about it.

Agreed, Steam is a fantastic service.

I don't even mind some games being £5 more on Steam, I've saved way more than that in the past with their awesome sales.

I'm a Steam convert - I used to insist on buying hard copies, but nowadays, I like the fact that I don't have tonnes of shelf space taken up with my games.

They do what they do really well, and I usually just wait until a sale if I want something cheaper.

and you can see why, if they undercut stores then the big names really would cut out their products which the publishers don't want till steam is the main way of buying games anyway.

Steam is certainly the future of how we obtain our PC games, but boy are the prices on Steam way too high.

I was looking over some of the ‘cheaper’ for sale items on Steam this morning and noticed Tomb Raider Legend – quite an old game now. Its listed with most retailers online at about £3 - £7. Steam wants £13.99 for it, its just one example. Nearly twice as much as the most expensive online retailer.

Steams prices set by them or the devs is, to be quite frankly disgusting. I’m very much in favour of Steam seeing as how high street retailers seem less and less keen to hold stock of PC games, after all their core market is consoles. And they need the shelf space for what is no doubt their biggest profit margin… so if obtaining games online is fast becoming the only violable method then Steam need to get their prices inline with everyone else.

Waiting for Steam sales, as great as they can be is not the answer. Say, I wanted to play that tomb raider game. What’s my only option now? Buy from online retailer but not have the game listed and updated by Steam but have physical media and wait on postage or wait for Steam to push it out in sale, if that ever happens? Granted, you’d say Valve have to pay for the storage space and upkeep of the game, but its not worth twice the cost..!! Maybe an additional 1 – 2 quid.

Anyhow, retailers are maybe jealous of the fact that Steam seems to sell at full price whereas retailers have to discount heavily to get goods out the door. I don’t know for sure, but one thing I do know. Steam is way, way too expensive unless you grab stuff in the sales.
