Ok, I got my copy of Deus Ex delivered today, but steam will not let me install as the games official release date isn't until friday! Surely as I bought the boxed retail version I should be able to install and play now??

Effectively you shouldn't have the game at all yet, I agree it was fun in the old days where a disk on the door matt 2 days early cause for excitement but it was never going to stay like that forever in a connected society. The platform they chose (steam thankfully) unlocks games on release date, they aren't going to take special measures to allow people to break that just because shops send the disks early.

edit: Look at the plus side, hopefully with on-line activation they will stop sending the disks out at the last minute and potentially missing the release date.

I'm not sure why you say 'thankfully'! Had nothing but trouble getting steam to create an account and connect! No chance it would let me into my old account from HL2 days.

I say thankfully because steam is a brilliant platform. If you had a steam account from HL2 days then presumably the only thing stopping you from accessing it is that you have forgotten your login details which is hardly the fault of Steam.

It wasn't just getting into my old account though. Had problems with it just locking up during my attempts to create a new account. And it would not let me pick my own account name, had to pick one of the suggested ones in the end. Sorted now anyway :) Looks like I will just have to wait until Friday to play though :(

I have indeed read them. Only made this post as I thought the steam and boxed versions were separate. I'd have just bought the steam version had I realised they were one and the same thing.
Not sure I want to mess around with VPN's.

They are the same thing... The only difference is you get a fancy box and disk with the retail version.

Once you activate it, they're the exact same product. But the games been marked as Steamworks for ages.
