Retail - OEM

Also retail comes with 3 years warranty comapred to oem's 1 year, and the new cpus (Skylake K series) no longer come with a heat sink.
 
Intel retail CPUs give you direct Intel warranty without asking an invoice or any proof of purchase, simply just tell them the information on the CPU and you are good to go.
Intel OEM CPUs do not give you this privilege, you have to contact the system provider where you bought the system originally. Normally, they only have 1 year warranty.

Skylake and socket 2011 CPU will not come with a heatsink.
 
If it's £10 or more cheaper I usually go for OEM, there's not much chance a CPU will fail anyway if it's not DOA. The CPU is one of the most reliable parts in a PC.

That's good because the cost savings will be passed onto the consu- sorry, I can't finish that sentence with a straight face!

For the record,

4770K tray MSRP has been $339 from launch.
6700K tray MSRP will be $313.

Although tray price I believe refers to OEM prices.

I always go with retail, better warranty. But Intel is pretty loose about their warranty anyway. Having purchasing my old used 3770k off eBay and RMA'd to Intel without a purchase receipt with no problems.
 
If the warranty is the main benefit of retail, what happens if overclocking is planned? Doesn't that void any warranty anyway?

I don't know if you have overclocked it or not. Usually, if you don't mention it, they don't ask. They only care if a cpu has any PHYSICAL damage or not. :p

Speaking from my experience, I have RMAed 6 CPUs up till this point. :cool:
 
Retail - 3 year warranty, comes in box, with instructions, most of the time with a heatsink, depends on the CPU.

OEM - 1 year warranty, none of the above.
 
I would be more worried about the fact that OCUK bin CPUs for 8 Pack rigs and sealed retail boxed CPUs are not binned. Well, unless they're opened but I would send anything back that had been opened..

I always buy retail for the warranty. It wasn't even legal for OEM CPUs to be sold for many years, they were for system builders only so we used to get around it by selling them an OS or a hard drive.. Storage or media.
