Yeah, that's right baby . . a RANT!

I work at a large chain store that sell DIY stuff as a part time job whilst at uni. I only work weekends which is adequate.

Anyhow here's my story for today; I'd started my shift (8 hours) and did the usual, geared myself up and picked up the equipment for what I'd need for the day. My supervisor asked me to be the telephonist for the day. I went to the office and started working, whilst dealing with a few customers it started to get rather busy on shop floor we were short of staff and I could hear Jackie putting out her second call out. As soon I dealt with a customer, I obliged to assist her. When I approached her, she said customer saw this Black and decker kit for £7 something and it's coming up at £12.48. I started walking with the customer back to the aisle where he had picked the item up from and whilst walking there I told him that if the product details had corresponded with the label, I'd honour the price.

We had arrived there and I had instantly seen that the product was misplaced and I told him the barcode didn't correspond. It was then that this guy had turned in Satan. He started shouting and ranting on about how he couldn't care less about if the barcode corresponded. After he finished ranting I cut him short and told him it was fairly blatant that it was misplaced and he said to me "Well it's not my fault naaa then is it? Yo' staff should place it where it belongs and you have said you would have honoured it because it also says black and decker". Cue 2 minutes of ranting I was ready to get him thrown out of the store for being abusive, anyways I just patiently stood there and folded my arms till he had finished, couldn't believe this guy, he was starting to square up towards me little fatty, I'm rather stocky and do boxing, so I'm not exactly small. After he was done I just said "Sorry sir, I can't do anything for you" and I then started to walk off. He then demanded to see a store manager. At this point I obliged and walked off to call the service manager, on my way there I met another member of management who was the best member of management I've ever had. Anyhow I told him customer wanted to speak with you and he was being rude, manager walked over and asked him what the problem was. Mr Arsey started going on about how he works in a multi-million corp and how they'd treat customers, manager had just told him we'll take it off the shelves as it's a misprice but we can't sell it to you. Customer had started walking off with his two baby girls groaning. Over £4 this guys embarrassed himself and made himself look like an arse. If he was nice and calm my manager said I'd have give him what he wanted.

Straight after, I went back to the office and answered a phone call and I heard the following "I've ******g had enough, I'm really 'peeeved' off . . . " I cut him short and told him to hold on a minute, I then proceeded to kick back and put my feet up, I then answered the phone and just blagged him off.

An hour later I was talking to the girls at the returns desk, after a while customer asked for assistance, I was happy to help as per usual. He had explained that he wanted a hedge trimmer and that there were none on the shelves apart from the display model which was literally brand new. I had told him we can't usually sell display models we're told it's store policy. The customer became rude and started ranting on about stupidity and logic. He then asked for a manager. I got my supervisor and told him the customer was moaning and being rude. My supervisor asked store manager if we could sell it, the manager had said yes at your discretion. My supervisor had approached the customer and his tone was out of order. Result? He didn't get anything.

Lets just say there were a couple of more incidents and I had never dealt with so many rude people in one day!

On the flip side, a customer was very polite and they wanted a product, I saw a little mark on the side and the customer wasn't too fussed as it was literally a bit of dirt. Anyhow I instantly got the customer 10% off his £500 purchase and helped him to his boot.

I really don't understand why people continue to be foul mouthed and rude. It gets you absolutely no where. Be nice and genuine people will usually go out of their way to help you.

/Rant.

true sometimes, but life changes peoples opinions.

you never know with the first guy, maybe he was always a really nice person, but every time he was nice, the employee just took advantage of him and just left him with no bonus for being nice, so eventually he starts getting annoyed at this and get a little angry, which gives him what he wants. so he will continue it again getting what he wants, until eventually he has become so angry and the employee doesn't want to bother, like today.

Shop without customers, BLISS!

Never understand these people that rant and argue with shop assistants, if they are polite they are more likely to get what they asked for.

Before i've had a woman turn red and start crying over 3 clubcard points, pathetic!

Somethingawful have loads of stories about dumb customers in their comedy goldmine section. Well worth a look.

I'm not going to link it, for obvious reasons. You know where to look.

I work at a large DIY chain too and have exactly the same problems pretty much every day.

Last week, a woman came in at 8.05pm (we close at 8, all the shutters were down but doors weren't locked as there was one person in still at the checkout) and demanded all these replacement parts for her kitchen. Fair dos, but she also wanted to buy stuff and wasn't sure exactly what her husband needed. We offered to help but she declined, came back 10 mins later in a mood as the item was out of stock and left swearing and blinding about how useless we were. Classic bit came because I put the outside doors on lock so no one else could come in and she walked into the doors, expecting them to open automatically :p

The thing was she works in Burton right next to our store there . . . but chose to travel 20 odd miles to our store instead, past closing time

Because B&Q employees there to be abused. I got it a lot when i worked there, that and smelly old men. Yuck :(

Yeah, as a cashier, i got treated like something off the bottom of your shoe.

Absolutely no respect as a human being!

If you think this is bad you should try working in a swimming pool in the summer holidays, little buggers all over the joint thinking their something special and that i shouldnt treat them like everyone else because they have a big brother/sister/uncle/dad whatever.

Weve had members of staff threatened after their shift due to kicking people out because of dangerous behaviour, another member of staff assaulted on the poolside due to asking someone not to flip and the other week a member of staff being bitten 3 times while trying to stop a customer entering the pool as they would have been a danger to themselves and others.

i work for ikea and i can say i hate customers, most are idiots!

one customer came up to me a few days ago with a sheet with 2 product numbers. one was for a 2 seat sofa bed cover the other was incorrect. i asked him what the 2nd one was and he said it was a cover for a 2 seat sofa, so i said its not as it is wrong. he then went off on one. once he calmed down i asked what colour it was and he then told me. He had written the last 2 digits wrong, but according to him he had written them right.

I said to him that he should go downstairs look for the cover with this item code on, then he said to me that if i get it home and its not right are you going to pay for my petrol money!
at this point i actually LOL'd in his face!!! i was like No! pick up the right cover and then this wont happen!

he then left after calling me a ******.

I am allowed to sit down at the desk as i am really tall and the screen is fairly low. So sitting down waiting for next customer, when a customer says "are you getting up then?" i said "what for?" and he replied "to serve me"

i then said to him "but you havent said anything to me so how do i know what you want!?"

turns out he wanted to know if something was in stock, so i sat back down on my stool and told him. just before i gave it back i said "next time tell me what you need and if it warrants me to follow you then ok, but if you need me to check something or do anything with the computer then be a bit more polite"

twas fun

there are definately more stories i have but cant think of any at the moment!

another story where i have actually lost my temper.

customer was complaining about something not in stock he then said a number of abusive words at me. i then stopped him mid flow and said "if you ever saw me on the street you wouldnt dare call me what you called me now"

he looked up at me (w00t 6'6) and then shut up and left.

God i hate customers. normally i dont have a problem as people are normally scared to argue with me! they pick on the smaller staff members.

I know the feeling, I wonl at a high street electrical retailer and some of the customers I get are unbelievable. Some of the things they complain about etc is silly.

One guy bought a memoery card for his mobile from my store and he couldn't get it to working his phone (which he hadn't bought from us), so we formatted his memory card which got it working and showed him how to transfer his pictures onto the memory card because his mobiel wouldn't save pictures directly to the card. After spending about 30 minutes helping the guy out he moaned for about 10-15 minutes that we had wasted his time and and that we shouldn't sell memory cards that don't work right away :o

I work at welcome break, a nice company, and I have to say whilst the customers are generally bearable, you can get some awful people you have to serve. Whilst I have more stories about stupid customers that you can shake a stick at, I find this quick one sums up how rude people can be:

"Hello sir, how may I help you?"
"I would like *states an order very quietly and fast*"
"I do apologise sir, I didn't quite catch that, could you repeat it for me please"
"Maybe you try ******* listening then?"
"...........!"

I always make a point of making my please and thank yours to anyone in retail now. A nice customer can really make your day, and its not even hard to do.

I get the same thing all the time at my work(halfords bike department).

They either want the display model.....they dont want to wait 4 days to collect it built....the son/daughter/grandsons birthday is tomorow and they want a bike(and this is my fault?)

People that snap over the slightest things get zero respect, they get the bare minimum service i have to give. If they ask nicely then i can usually help them out if i can.

Just recently i went to a proper bikeshop for a bike part...didnt have the one i needed but the guys used a conversion kit(£15) on it so i could buy it that day. They were helpful to me(didnt even need to ask for them to do that) so i will shop there again.

That brings me on to people that give it the "i've had nothing but trouble from halfords" if you go to a restaurant and the food is bad you dont go back do you,so why is it different for a shop?

I have to ask for telephone numbers so we can contact the customer is there is a problem with their bike and i had a guy the other day.

"...and finally a phone number?"
"NO!"
" "

Can he not construct a sentance? Whats wrong with "I'd rather not give you it" or even state a reason why.

I love aggressive customers, they think they get there way while being aggressive, when really it gets them nowhere.

Had a guy in a while back

Me - "How can i help sir?"
Him - "I bought this game and i dont like it, i want a refund"
Me - "Im sorry sir, we dont do refunds just because you dont like a game"
Him - "Well thats a bit stupid"
Me - "Well sir, we didnt make you buy the game, it was your choice to buy it"
Him - "Right, im going home and am going to put a scratch though it and bring it back broken"
Me - "Then it will be replaced with another copy of the same game"
*my colleage steps in*
Mate - "And since youve admitted your going to damage the item, we will refuse the exchange anyway"
Him - "Watch yourselves tonight lads, im going to break your legs"
Me - "I suggest you remove yourself from this store now sir, unless you want the police involved"
Him - "Aye right, you wouldnt dare"
*me picks up radio and calls on security, he runs out of shop faster than ligthing*
*Security guard arrives, i show him CCTV footage and bam, hes got himself banned from the entire shopping centre, and still is 6 months on*

Come in and be nice and ill help you if i can. Had a guy come in with a broken 360 for an exchange outside our 28 period so he should have went to micosoft. He came in and was very calm and kind so i exchanged it on the spot. My manager asked why i done it as i shouldnt have and just said he threatened me with the sales of goods act so let him have a new one, which he didnt.

you should learn some customer service skills. standing there uninterested, with your arms folded, did nothing for the situation. thinking those abusive things most probably mean you were showing your disgust and for the person and no doubt made it seem like you were above him (as you think that you are), how do you know he couldnt kick your ass stupid, just because you 'do boxing' doesnt mean you wont get your ass handed to you at some point.

Hmm you should be replacing that up to one year anyway.

On an item that was sealed upon sale, and returned open, used and covered in fingerprints. If it was still sealed then fine, but by him admitting its not new by saying he has played it then technically its not new and cant be returned as a new item.
